APA replaces SA gas mains

During the next eight years, the program will replace a total of 1,600 km of gas mains throughout Adelaide.

The current stage of the program plans for the upgrade of around 1,000 km at a cost of $A250 million over the next five years.

The existing mains planned for replacement are a combination of cast iron, unprotected steel and steel pipes. APA said that some of these pipes have been in place for over 80 years and are increasingly inadequate for the growing demand for natural gas.

Mains selected for the upgrade will be replaced with polyethylene pipe, either by insertion into the old main or by laying a new pipe.

The APA Group operates, maintains and extends the South Australian natural gas network under contract to Envestra, the network’s owner.
