Barikewa-3 well strikes gas

The well, located in the Forelands region, intersected 25 m of net gas pay within the Toro and Hedinia reservoir objectives.

A drill-stem test was carried out across the Toro interval, with the on-site analysis of the gas from test and earlier wireline sampling confirming a dry gas with approximately 20 per cent nitrogen, in line with pre-drill expectations.

Barikewa-3 reached a total depth of 1,943 m and will be plugged and abandoned upon completion of the test and data retrieval.

Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher was enthusiastic about the drilling results.

“The Barikewa-3 result is encouraging and confirms that there are significant natural gas resources close to PNG LNG infrastructure still to be developed,” he said.

“Barikewa is located approximately 10 km from the PNG LNG gas pipeline and is therefore well placed to play a part in future LNG expansion projects.”

The well is located in the PRL9 JV with operator Oil Search holding a 45.1 per cent interest.

Santos owns a 40 per cent stake, with Cue possessing the remaining 14.9 per cent.
