Industry association APPEA launches inaugural First Nations report

In a first for the organisation, the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) has published an inaugural report focused on First Nations activities within the Australian oil and gas industry.

The report, titled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Relations: Respecting First Nations Peoples and Communities, provides an overview of the industry’s relationship with First Nations peoples.

The report includes background, historical information, and several case studies from APPEA members working in the oil and gas industry that highlight themes such as reconciliation, employment, education, environment, and community development.

As the peak national body for the upstream Australian oil and gas industry, APPEA’s membership includes several national and international majors, encompasses an estimated 98 per cent of Australian petroleum production.

APPEA and its members work closely with Land Councils, Native Title holders, Traditional Owners, and other relevant bodies at every stage of project development. Others still engage closely with First Nations communities through initiatives such as youth training, fire abatement programs, tree plantings, sport sponsorships, art projects, and scholarships.

Several members of the organisation are also active participants in developing community engagement initiatives, healthcare, social service, and Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs), several of which are listed in the report.
