LNG boom means jobs for QLD

The plan was announced by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and coincides with the official opening of Santos’ Queensland headquarters in Brisbane.

Santos Queensland and GLNG President Rick Wilkinson has said that the plan was the first stage of Santos and Petronas’ jobs and training investment plan, to provide positions in the Roma region and in Gladstone.

The plan includes $16 million for up to 100 new diesel mechanics, electricians and electrical instrument apprentices and traineeships in plant operations, a $30 million investment in Queensland secondary schools and tertiary institutions, and a $4 million training package to support a target of 300 indigenous GLNG jobs.

Mr Wilkinson said “It’s an incredible story unfolding right here in Queensland – where so many people have the opportunity to gain trade, training and tertiary qualifications that could take them anywhere in the world as this new industry takes off.”?

Santos is also exploring means by which to expand this program into other industries that would support the project such as carpenters, builders or food services.

The GLNG Project includes a 3.5 million tonne per annum (MMt/a) LNG processing train and associated infrastructure as well as a 435 km pipeline linking a compression station to the liquefaction plant. A gas supply of 170 to 220 PJ/a will be sourced from Santos’ coal seam gas fields in Queensland’s Bowen and Surat Basins.
