Pluto LNG commences construction

The Western Australia development, involving the construction of an LNG processing facility on the Burrup Peninsula with gas to be supplied from the Pluto gas field, began construction in November last year after environmental approval was granted in October.

Chief executive Don Voelte said “Pluto is on schedule to be the fastest LNG project in the world from discovery to first gas, and the start of construction of the project is a very exciting time for Woodside.”?

The LNG project will initially include one natural gas production train producing 4.3 million tonnes per annum (MMt/a) but has been designed for expansion up to 12 MMt/a. Woodside said feasibility work has already begun on an expansion of Pluto, by the addition of a second production train.

Also in November, Aker Kvaerner Subsea was awarded a $A21.55 million contract to supply 28 km of steel tube umbilicals to Pluto.

Leighton Contractors has secured an $A163 million contract to undertake site preparation bulk earthworks at the new Burrup LNG site. Site preparation and earthworks have commenced and are scheduled to continue through until the third quarter of 2008.

The Foster Wheeler/WorleyParsons joint venture has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management contract for the project’s onshore production plant and associated infrastructure. WorleyParsons was also recently awarded the detailed design for Stage 1 of the Pluto Marina Supply Base and diversified technology and manufacturing company, Honeywell, secured a contract to provide a Design Integrated Control System for the project in January.
