Project Atlas gas pipeline complete

Queensland’s first domestic-only gas project, Senex’s Project Atlas, is one step closer to the east coast gas market, after 60 kilometres of buried pipeline was completed.

Energy infrastructure provider Jemena announced today that the pipeline had reached mechanical completion, less than three months after construction began in July.

Senex managing director and chief executive officer Ian Davies said Project Atlas would deliver its first gas by the end of this calendar year.

“With great progress being made by Jemena and Senex, Project Atlas will deliver first sales gas by the end of 2019,” Davies said.

Senex and Jemena partnered in June 2018 to build, own and operate a 15 petajoule per annum gas processing facility and 60km buried pipeline to Wallumbilla Hub in the Manaroa region.

Once online, the project will feed coal seam gas to the processing facility, connected to the pipeline that will process and transport gas from Wandoan in the Surat Basin region to Wallumbilla Hub,

Construction of the Project Atlas gas processing facility is ongoing, with commissioning of the facility and pipeline beginning soon.

Minister for Natural Resources, Mining and Energy Anthony Lynham said the completed pipeline was a major milestone in securing domestic gas supply for Queensland manufacturers.

“Manufacturers need gas as a feedstock and energy source, and the completion of this pipeline brings Project Atlas one step closer to the market,” Lynham said.

“Senex’s Project Atlas is the first gas venture created by this government’s innovative domestic market policy and Queensland continues to set the pace on gas supply and policy.”
