Santos downsizes with job cuts amid COVID-19

Santos plans to slash its contingent workforce by 150 employees to reflect reduced project work, while a further 500 employees will be forced to take a fortnight of paid annual leave over the Easter period.

The moves follow several challenging weeks, with the company seeing it as an opportunity to implement an office shutdown and give people time to adjust to new ways of living while efforts to control COVID-19 continue.

Last week, Santos announced that it expected to defer a final investment decision (FID) on the Barossa liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in northern Australia due to the uncertain economic impact of COVID-19 combined with the lower oil price.

In addition to the Easter office shutdown, Santos has also reduced its contingent workforce to reflect reduced project work.
