Victoria announces $10 million gas study

The study will primarily focus on the Otway Basin in south west Victoria, where the funds will used on scientific, technical and environmental studies into onshore conventional gas extraction and development.

The three-year study will coincide with the current extended moratorium on onshore conventional gas, and will be led by Victoria’s Chief Scientist Amanda Caples.

“By getting this important research done, we’re giving our regional communities certainty about the risks and effects of onshore conventional gas,” said Victorian Resources Minister Wade Noonan.

“There is still genuine concern about this issue, and we will make sure everyone has the facts they need.”

A stakeholder advisory panel made up of farmers, industry, local governments and community groups will also be set up in conjunction with the study.

As of yet no appointments have been made to the advisory panel.
