The Victorian Government introduced two new bills on Tuesday that will see the freeze on onshore gas exploration and production lifted, and fracking banned.
The new legislation will see the historic ban on fracking and coal seam gas exploration in the Victorian Constitution enshrined.
As part of the two new bills, the second piece of legislation will allow for a restart of onshore conventional gas exploration and development from July 1, 2021.
The decision follows after a three-year investigation by the Victorian gas program, which found an onshore conventional gas industry would not compromise the state’s environmental and agricultural credentials.
The studies identified the Otway Basin to have strong onshore conventional gas resources, stretching across the South Australian boarder.
